The Museum of Flight

LifeFormations produced twelve historical, realistic, touchable, hard surface figures for the Museum of Flight in Seattle, Washington. The figures are mounted throughout the expansive open air aviation museum among a vast collection of historic aircraft, with each located adjacent to the appropriate plane. Visitors are able to pose with the figures for photo-ops, so it was essential that they were durable, yet highly realistic.

The first step in creating these figures was to produce each one as a full 3d digital sculpture. These highly detailed files became the source for the custom milled figures. Many of the small, intricate detailed pieces were printed on a 3d printer to be molded and cast into the final product.

The figures are produced in fiberglass and urethanes over stainless steel armatures, and are custom hand-finish painted with outdoor grade paints and finishes.
